## Chapter 1 What Is a BSOD?

The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is an error message that appears when a program crashes. It is usually accompanied by a stop code, which is a hexadecimal number that indicates the reason for the crash. The stop code can be used to look up the cause of the crash in the Windows Event Viewer.

The BSOD is not the same as the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) error message you may have seen on Linux or other operating systems, which is a kernel panic that occurs when the kernel detects an unrecoverable hardware error. The BSOD is more like a kernel panic in that it is usually accompanied by a stop code and can be used to look up the cause of the crash. But unlike a kernel panic, the BSOD is not necessarily fatal.

The BSOD can occur for many reasons, including:

* A driver bug
* An application bug
* A hardware problem (e.g., overheating)
* A memory leak
* A hardware failure (e.g., bad RAM)
* A power supply failure

## Chapter 2 How to Fix the BSOD

The first step in fixing a BSOD is to find out what caused it. The stop code will tell you which driver or application was running when the BSOD occurred, but it won’t tell you why it happened.

1. **Check the Event Viewer** for the stop code.
2. **Fix the problem** with the following methods:
* Check for updates
* Reinstall drivers
* Run Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool (MemDiag)
* Use the Windows Driver Verifier
* Try a different video driver
* Try a different video cable
* Try a different monitor
* Try a different GPU
* Try a different power supply
* Try a different CPU
* Try a different motherboard
* Try a different RAM module
* Try a different hard drive
* Try a different operating system (e.g., Windows 10)
* Try a different browser
